What are the prerequisites for installing GFI MailEssentials in a Windows Server 2008 or newer?


To install GFI MailEssentials on Microsoft Windows 2008 or newer, a number of prerequisites need to be installed:
  • Application Server role
  • Web Server (IIS) role
  • SMTP Server feature (optional)

1. Application Server & Web Server (IIS) roles

To add the Application Server and Web Server (IIS) roles on Microsoft Windows Server:
  1. Open Server Manager, expand Roles Summary and click Adds Roles.
  2. Read the Before you begin information provided in the wizard and click Next.
  3. From the Select Server Roles dialog select Application Server and Web Server (IIS) and click Next.
    NOTE: If the roles are already installed, ensure that their features are enabled as per remaining instructions.
    NOTE: A dialog box prompting you to install various dependencies may be displayed. Click on the Add required role services button in the displayed dialog box to continue installation.
  4. Read the Application Server information provided in the wizard and click Next.
  5. In the Application Server - Role Services screen, select Web Server (IIS) Support, Windows Process Activation Service Support and HTTP Activation.
    NOTE: A dialog box prompting you to install various dependencies may be displayed. Click on the Add Features button in the displayed dialog box to continue installation.
  6. Read the Web Server (IIS) information provided in the wizard and click Next.
  7. In the Web Server Role (IIS) - Role Services screen, the features list below should already be selected. Click Next.

      • Default Document
      • Directory Browsing
      • HTTP Errors
    • Health and Diagnostics
      • HTTP Logging
      • Request Monitor
    • Security
      • Request Filtering
    • Performance
      • Static Content Compression
    • Management Tools
      • IIS Management Console
  8. In the Confirm Installations Selections screen click Install to finalize the Web Server IIS role installation.
 

2. Verify Web Server (IIS) role installation

To check if the Web Server (IIS) role was successfully installed and in operation:
  1. Open Microsoft Internet Explorer and go to http://localhost. The IIS7 splash screen should be displayed.
 
***IMPORTANT: Steps 3 only applies if GFI MailEssentials is NOT being installed on the same machine where ANY Microsoft Exchange 2007 or later role is installed.***
 

3. Add SMTP Server feature

  1. From the Server Manager expand the Features Summary node and click Add Features.
  2. In the Select Features dialog choose SMTP Server and click Next
    NOTE: A dialog box prompting you to install various SMTP Server dependencies may be displayed. If this is the case click on the Add required role services button in the displayed dialog box to continue installation.
  3. Finalize SMTP Server feature installation.
  4. In the Select Role Services dialog choose the role services to install and click Next.
    NOTE: It is highly recommended that the default Role Services are used for GFI MailEssentials.
  5. Review the information displayed in the Confirm Installation Selections dialog and click Install to install SMTP Server and finalize installation.
