Error: 'The credentials supplied are incorrect' when upgrading SQL database schema using GFI Archiver Bulk Schema Upgrader


PROBLEM

When attempting to upgrade the database schema for a GFI Archiver SQL databases, the following error message is displayed in the GFI Archiver Bulk Schema Upgrader:

The credentials supplied are incorrect

ENVIRONMENT

  • GFI Archiver
  • Using Microsoft SQL server as a backend for the Archive Stores

SOLUTION

When the GFI Archiver Bulk Schema Upgrader shows the dialog to enter username and password ensure to enter the username and password of a SQL Server authentication type login which is member of the sysadmin role within the Microsoft SQL server instance (normally SA).

To check within Microsoft SQL server which logins have a sysadmin server role:

  1. Open the Microsoft SQL Server Management Studio
  2. Expand Security > Server Roles
  3. Right click on the sysadmin server role and select Properties
  4. You can find the Role Members in the right pane
To check within Microsoft SQL server which type a login is:
  1. Open the Microsoft SQL Server Management Studio
  2. Expand Security > Logins
  3. Right click on the login in question and select Properties
  4. In the general tab a radio button indicates the type of the login (it is either Windows authentication or SQL Server authentication)

CAUSE

The error message mentioned above is displayed when the credentials supplied during the GFI Archiver Bulk Schema Upgrade do not have the appropriate privileges to upgrade the database schema.

The credentials supplied need to be of a user who has the sysadmin server role on the Microsoft SQL Server hosting the GFI Archiver database(s).
