GFI FaxMaker Client form does not open when a document is printed on the GFI FaxMaker printer

PROBLEM

GFI FaxMaker Client form does not open when a document is printed on the GFI FaxMaker printer.

ENVIRONMENT

  • GFI FaxMaker
  • all supported environments

SOLUTION

  1. Open task manager and click on "show processes from all users".
  2. Verify whether one instance of fmstart.exe is running under the sending user's account.
  • If fmstart.exe is not running under the sending user's account, you can manually start the process from the GFI FaxMaker client install directory.
Note:
The default path of GFI FaxMaker installation root is: ..Program Files\GFI\FaxMaker Client (If 64 bit, ...Program Files (x86)\GFI\FaxMaker Client)
To ensure that fmstart.exe starts after the server / machine reboot, it can be added as a startup task.

If issue persists:
  1. Start regedit.exe with administrative permissions
  2. Navigate to the following hives depending on your platform:
  • x86 bit: HKLM\Software\GFI Fax & Voice
  • x64 bit: HKLM\Software\Wow6432Node\GFI Fax & Voice
  1. Right click on "GFI Fax & Voice" and choose "Permissions..."
  2. Ensure that "Everyone" is listed with "Full Control" permissions
  3. Click on "Advanced"
  4. Tick the option "Replace permission entries on all child objects with entries shown here that apply to child objects"
  5. Apply the permissions

If issue persists:

  1. Recreate the GFI FaxMaker printer by following: How to install or re-create the FaxMaker printer

CAUSE

fmstart.exe is a background process which runs in the context of the logged on user. The process needs access to certain registry keys in order to function properly.
