How to configure LANCOM devices with GFI FaxMaker using LANCAPI

This article will explain how to configure LANCAPI for use with GFI FaxMaker. It will cover two methods:

  • T.30 over CAPI (recommended)
  • CAPI Faxmodem over LANCAPI

A. T.30 over CAPI

Preliminary preparations:

  1. Download LANCAPI from LANCOM’s website. You will need to have a user account in order to access the download section.

  2. To use T.30 over CAPI you will need to activate the Fax Gateway option by acquiring a license from LANCOM.
Note: More information about the Fax Gateway option can be found in the LANCOM device documentation.

  1. To activate the licenses for the router, follow the steps below:
  2. Go to http://www.lancom.eu/routeroptions

  3. Click on Router Options

  4. Follow the Registration of Options wizard to complete the license activation

  5. At the end of the wizard you should get an Activation code to be inserted in the LANCOM device configuration.

Configuring the LANCOM Device

  1. Once all the necessary preparations are done, the LANCOM device should be configured appropriately in order to be used as a Fax Gateway.
  1. To activate the Fax Gateway option, access the LANCOM device configuration and go to Activate Software Option and enter the Activation Code generated earlier.
Note
  • the method of access of the Activate Software Option differs according to the method used to access the device configuration.
  • more information can be found in the LANCOM device documentation. .
  1. Once the Fax Gateway option is activated, the properties of the LANCOM device should show this information as seen in the screenshot below:

  2. The LANCOM device ISDN interface(s) should be configured correctly in order to be able to send faxes through the device.

Note: More information on how to configure the interfaces can be found in the LANCOM device documentation (as this varies depending on the LANCOM device model).

  3. LANCAPI should also be configured  from the LANCOM device configuration. The screenshot below shows which options need to be configured:

Configuring LANCOM device lines on GFI FAXmaker

Note: LANCAPI should be running on the same machine where GFI FAXmaker is installed. The LANCOM device should be detected successfully by the LANCAPI application. Access the LANCAPI documentation for more information.

  1. Go to GFI FAXmaker Configuration > Lines/Devices / Properties

  2. Add new line

  3. If using FaxMaker version 14.x set ‘Device Type’ to "ISDN BRI CAPI 2.0 devices" and click OK

  4. If using FaxMaker version 2011 or higher set 'Device Type' to "Gateway devices" and click OK

  5. Set ‘ISDN Type’ to LANCOM 1700 Series or LANCOM 1800 Series (depending on the model used)

  6. At this stage the Lines on the LANCOM devices should be available for use, as illustrated in the image below:

B. CAPI Faxmodem over LANCAPI

Although T.30 over LANCAPI is the recommended method of configuration, using a CAPI Faxmodem over LANCAPI can be used as an alternative if using T.30 over LANCAPI is not an option for you.

The follow steps will guide the user how to set up LANCOM device lines to be set as COM line:
  1. Install the CAPI Faxmodem virtual driver on the machine where GFI FAXmaker installed.

  2. As done in the previous method, configure the ISDN Interface and LANCAPI configuration from the LANCOM device configuration.

Note: In order to use the LANCOM device using this method there is no need to activate the Fax Gateway option.

  2. Click on ‘Detect’ button

  3. The LANCOM device line should be detected as a COM device using the Generic Modem profile. Note that when used in this method you are only allowed to use one line instead of the two lines available per BRI line channel. (when used in T.30 over CAPI)

At this stage the Lines on the LANCOM devices should be available for use.
