GFI's popular network security scanner goes commercial
London, UK, 19 September 2002 - GFI, developer of content security and network security software, today launched GFI LANguard Network Security Scanner 3.0, a commercial version of its popular freeware tool for conducting network security audits. GFI LANguard N.S.S. 3 is far simpler to use and understand than most security scanners on the market today and is much more affordable.
GFI LANguard N.S.S. automatically detects security vulnerabilities on a network, giving administrators a "hacker's eye view" of their network and enabling them to discover any security holes before a malicious user can exploit them. GFI LANguard N.S.S. scans entire networks for vulnerabilities, creates reports and can remotely install security patches.
Detects and installs missing security patches on Windows machines One of the greatest administrative headaches is ensuring that the latest security patches are installed on each network machine. GFI LANguard N.S.S. detects which service packs and security patches are installed per machine and identifies missing patches and packs. Once it has found a machine that lacks security patches, it can push the right patches to the remote machine, either installing them immediately or scheduling a time for them to install - all without user intervention, which drastically decreases the administrative load.
Simplified network security scanning GFI LANguard N.S.S. simplifies the network security audit process. Unlike other security scanners that flood users with a barrage of information that is practically impossible to follow up, GFI LANguard N.S.S. highlights the most important security issues and can fix them by remotely installing security patches.
Poses no burden on the security administrator's budget Commercial network security scanners are traditionally very expensive. The new commercial version of GFI LANguard N.S.S. is much more competitively priced, at just US$249 for up to 50 IPs and US$450 for up to 250 IPs, for example - as compared to pricing for other security scanners, which starts at US$1000 for 16 IPs. GFI LANguard N.S.S. is one of the most popular network security scanners on offer: It has been downloaded 750,000 times since its launch 1.5 years ago! GFI LANguard N.S.S. continues to be available as freeware, offering a base feature set that identifies essential security issues.
Other new features Other new GFI LANguard N.S.S. features include:
- Report generator - Enables the user to define queries for filtering scan reports; for example, the administrator can find all machines with open shares, or all machines which lack service pack 3
- Auto-detects new issues with scheduled scans - GFI LANguard N.S.S. can be scheduled to run a scan and email the differences it finds as compared to the previous scan
- LANguard scripting - Includes a script creator for writing complex and/or custom security checks
- UDP scanning
- More auditing/security checks - Includes a wider range of alerts and new audits
- Auditing check - Now includes the ability to check if auditing is enabled on a machine, and to modify the auditing events done by the machine
- Faster performance - Due to multithreading, code tweaks, and other innovative changes, GFI LANguard N.S.S. 3 is faster than previous versions.
