32 bit LAN fax server for Windows NT & 95
London, UK, 24 April 1996 - GFI announces FAXmaker 5.0, a 32 bit LAN Fax server for Windows NT and Novell networks, that offers clients running Windows NT/95/3.1 & DOS, fax capabilities. FAXmaker integrates tightly with MS Exchange and adds corporate fax features such as inbound fax routing, fax archiving and call accounting.
Windows 95 users receive faxes in their Exchange inbox, and are able to view, route or print faxes from MS Exchange. A Quick fax feature allows for fast faxing directly from the application - all fax conversion is off-loaded to the fax server, and control is returned to the user quickly. Feedback is provided via pop up network messages and/or the Fax manager application, which displays a history of all faxes.
Besides extending MS Exchange, FAXmaker 5.0 adds important network fax features such as multi line capability, automatic inbound routing, integration with other e-mail packages such as Novell Groupwise, Multi platform clients (WIN 3.1/NT, WIN 95, DOS & OS/2) and a suite of administration applications for call accounting, fax archiving and retrieval, fax broadcasting and remote configuration.
FAXmaker for Networks main features:
- Automatic inbound fax routing - An important ability for Network fax packages is to be able to determine the right recipient of an incoming fax. FAXmaker has several ways of achieving this. CSID routing is based on the FAX ID (identification of the fax machine), which can be related to a recipient. DID routing is based on assigning a extensions to each user, which may be obtained from the local telecom company. Using and ISDN/DID PBX this is a very reliable and cost effective method. Alternatively a fax can be routed by recognizing the text on the page (OCR), and finding keywords related to a recipient. A third and last method is using DTMF, which requires the caller to enter an extension number when sending a fax.
- Native Windows NT server - The Fax server runs as a native 32 bit application on Windows NT server or on a windows NT/95 workstation, and supports IPX, TCP/IP and Netbios compatible networks. A windows 3.11 server is available on request.
- Unified messaging/E-Mail integration - Until recently, users had to check separate packages for different forms of messages; Faxes, E-mail or voice mail were stored in separate mailboxes, or not available on the computer at all. (Fax or Voice mail). FAXmaker 5.0 integrates seamlessly into MS Exchange or other E-Mail packages (All MAPI 1.0 compatible e-mail systems) by logging all Faxes in the user's inbox.
- Client/Server implementation - The FAXmaker fax clients are designed to off-load the majority of the fax processing to the fax server, and to provide feedback on the fax-process to the user. Users will find that the typical time to prepare a fax will reduce by 80% when compared to MS at work fax. It also allows for high volume faxing, since the server can be equipped with multiple fax lines to handle a higher volume of fax traffic.
- Multi platform / Network independent - Most networks today have different client operating systems using DOS, Windows 3.1, Windows 95, Windows NT and also MAC, OS/2 and UNIX. FAXmaker provides send and receive capability for all these systems using either a FAXmaker client or network print queues. Full client applications are available for DOS, Windows and OS/2 clients, whereas both MAC and UNIX environments are supported through e-mail packages.
- System administration tools & High volume faxing - FAXmaker allows the network administrator to be in complete control. User's configurations can be installed and managed remotely, and security and calling rights (which numbers a user may or may not dial) can be specified. A suite of system administration applications simplifies fax management; Outbound faxes can be costed per department or user, faxes can be compressed & archived automatically. High volume faxing can be achieved using FAXmaker's multi line capabilities coupled with the unique print queue feature, which allows for personalized fax mailings using your favourite word processor's mail merge feature. For custom applications an API (Application programming interface) is available.
- Other features - Quick fax feature for Windows clients provides fast response time, as well as thumbnail preview of cover pages and attachments, shared phone-books, network attachments and configurable pop-up messaging for feedback of the fax process. Faxes can be sent using the FAXmaker printer driver or directly from the application by embedding the fax number(s) in the document and printing to the network print queue, and from any e-mail package that supports MAPI.
"FAXmaker brings affordable and easy to use fax & voice technology on to the desktop of every LAN user" says Nick Galea, managing director of GFI. "Besides offering advanced fax functionality, FAXmaker is an invaluable tool to improve communications between and within Work-groups".
FAXmaker 5.0 costs $349 for 5 users. FAXmaker supports most popular fax modems, as well as high end fax/voice boards.
GFI will market its software through an international network of qualified dealers and distributors, but also through hardware manufacturers and Value added resellers. To this end it has set up a special value added reseller program which helps them explain FAXmaker's functionality and set up the system for end users.
