I think many/most companies are adopting the tactic of waiting to upgrade when they upgrade their hardware. Windows 8 on a touch screen offers many advantages. Without touch, not so much. My guess is that as business computing becomes even more mobile and tablet-centric, users will naturally migrate to Windows 8 on those devices, and then they'll be familiar with it when desktops "catch up" in a few years (or we'll have moved to a new paradigm whereby the tablet - in a much more powerful incarnation - is the primary computer and you just dock it to large screen monitors and full size keyboards to work at a desk).

Time will tell, I guess. If I was willing to ditch all my old apps and hardware, I could see how Windows 8 might work. However, since I chose to upgrade my existing home PC to Windows 8 I have been stuck fighting 8's schizophrenia.

At work I plan to keep our network on Windows 7 for the next 3 to 5 years. Hopefully this will give all our developers time to catch up and keep from burning out our multi-generational workforce with constant retraining.
