A very good list! It can be used to talk to your boss why you need Internet monitoring. I know that many employees frown upon the very idea of having Internet monitoring but having Internet at work doesn’t entitle them to illegal activities for free. Thanks for the list!

Using the Internet at work is a privilege – and not a right. If an employee disregards company policies about downloading heavy and not work-related files (such as movies, games, apps, and audio albums), he or she should be reprimanded. It’s easier this way.

Video streaming should also be controlled. And did I say that playing online games is a big no no?!!!

Although I do it sometimes, browsing the net for your next job should be frowned upon. You are using a company resource for God’s sake.

True, torrents can now be traced back to the downloader. So it’s not an excuse that you only downloaded one mp3 file. Downloading pirated mp3s, movies, ebooks, games, and apps/programs can tarnish an organization’s image. It’s not only illegal, it is also an irresponsible act.

Moreover, some torrents have malicious codes attached to them. When it is activated, it can infect your computer and your company’s network system.

The vast majority of these risks are blatant no-brainers, and employees should know better than to even try to get away with them. Sure, there are definitely workplace applications for IMs and even social networks, but most of these are just total no-nos, and employees have no business getting their feelings hurt if they get blocked by IT.

Just a hybrid – Facebooking, chatting with friends, and sharing some confidential company information (through the employee’s social media account) are the worst things when uncontrolled Internet usage is not managed the right way.

Employees are valuable company assets, but they can also be liabilities. It’s a matter of discipline. The HR and the organization’s executive department should have a clear set of rules and regulations that would guide all employees’ actions and behaviors – and this includes using the Internet for work-purposes only.
