Ten things administrators should never do

Being a system administrator is a great job if you love juggling conflicting priorities, managing infinite to-do lists, annoying users and facing ever-changing technologies. In a busy environment, there are corners you can cut and those you really shouldn’t. There are many efficiencies you can achieve without causing trouble; this is a list of things that are definitely not in that category.

A poor administrator can do more damage than several users engaging in dangerous use of their stations. Like the superhero movies always say, “With great permissions come great responsibility.” Or something like that.

IT administrators feel like gods. Not really meant to generalize but most people I met from my lot are, for the lack of the better term, arrogant. Most think that they are smart enough to try to do some things that get them on a hole, thinking they can get out of it, regardless of how logical it is not to do what they plan to do.

IT administrators should be the most paranoid of all. That type of perspective ensures that they will be very, very careful with what they do despite being overwhelmed with lots of tasks.
