Yung is right that because of spam we have become less sensitive to email. I do admit that on several occasions I know of, I have missed important emails because they looked like spam. Thanks to Scott for telling us how it all started - it was interesting to read.

In response to Yung's comment, I still receive several emails with FREE subjects. But this time, it's with pills and other types of "male enhancing" drugs.

These days, spammers specifically target the older generations or the baby boomers. This is because they're more naive, gullible, and ignorant - they can't distinguish spam emails from legitimate ones. Typically, these victim are aged 60-80 years old. Most of them have retirement money to shell out. They also get easily excited when they receive unsolicited messages.

When I was still new to the Internet and email (and NO knowledge at all about spam), I always get excited when someone sends me an email with the subject FREE - free laptop, free airfare, free financial quote, etc.

Today, I never got to see this type of spams and I never get excited at all - even if it's a solicited email message coming from a fried or a family. Spam made us sarcastic and stone-cold towards emails.

An interesting look back at what eventually became a daily nuisance for the rest of us. Anybody ever ask Thuerk for an apology?

Seriously though, think about the change of scope in this. This message may have hit a handful of people at most. Now think about the billions and billions of spam messages sent monthly. Kind of makes me feel ill to see how far along it's come without a concrete solution.
