I'm actually a frequent visitor of many Gawker Media sites, and I was e-mailed personally by their staff informing me about the recent security breach. It's great that they took the time out to e-mail their registered users on the potential threat to their accounts, but it still doesn't dismiss the fact that their vulnerabilities were exploited. Last I read, they're currently hiring a third party internet security agency to oversee and overhaul their current security system.

Found this article online after a running a search on Google on customer and employee protection online. Though this article is a couple of months old, it seems to be more relevant than ever. I've just heard news after the weekend that Gawker Media was hacked and the integrity of their password database compromised. They are now informing all their registered users to change their passwords as soon as possible. Although they were honorable enough to admit the problem, it's not something that their users should take lightly.

I’ve always believed that the internet (and technology in general) has literally outpaced the legislative process in adapting to the changes of an internet-reliant world. For the past decade or so, the legal system has been playing catch up to criminals abusing technology in new (and unfortunately, clever) ways to bait new victims. It’s good to hear news like this where I’m proven wrong. But the law still has a long way to go.

Scammers these days are becoming more and more believable. I have a friend who recently got involved in a Paypal scam when someone who claimed to be from a company in Ukraine needed someone who had a Paypal account to receive payments on their behalf as Paypal is not yet available in their country. She was told she will receive $20 dollars for every payment she received and forwards to their company through Western Union. She fell for it and they did give her $20. A month after, those people who "paid" claimed the payment were not authorized so now they are asking her back for the money and Paypal took it from her own account. Needless to say, those people from the Ukrainian cannot be reached anymore after she asked for an explanation.

Talking about identity theft, we recently had a baby and after the staff processed his papers for his SSN, she advised us to regularly check if his SSN has been used in identity theft. I know identity theft has been going on for a while now but I never really cared about it (because I assumed it could never happen to me) until now.

Identity theft is a serious issue and I'm glad there are companies who are taking the initiative to protect their people.

Great post. I hope that all 50 states will eventually adopt the same strict standards. It won't do much good for those who fall for phishing scams but it will hopefully makes companies much more responsible when it comes to protecting their data and networks!
