In the near future smartphones, netbooks, laptop and desktop computers will have a standard software, feature, and tools. For instance, Operating Systems will be uniform. Apple is starting this now with their Macbook - iPad integration.

The latest models of Macbook computers are slowly implementing the swipe and mobility factors of the iPad. The iPad's operating system, on the other hand, got some of the features of Lion OSX.

No matter if we like it or not, mobile devices are here to stay. I am wondering when they will overtake desktops in productivity - i.e. when employees will perform most of their tasks from a mobile. Sure, a mobile is not a desktop but for many tasks even now they are a viable replacement.

The mobility wave is a double-edged sword. On one hand, it allows employees to work remotely from the office. This scenario offer benefits to both the employee and the employer. The employee can work from home or anywhere he/she wants. The employer on the other hand, can lessen the number of workers working in the office thus saving the company tons of money from setting up a bigger office, paying electricity, hooking up to the Internet, etc.

The bad side of the mobility wave has to do with employee productivity. It's a known fact that once you work outside the supervision of a physical office, you tend to relax a bit. When not properly monitored, this so-called "relaxation" can lead to productivity issues - you'll most likely submit assignments late, you'll not respond to office emails immediately, you'll be detach from the team, etc.

I totally agree with Ulysses. Mobile devices are a great and valuable asset to Information Technology. Incorporating mobile gadgets to the office environment should be tolerated by the management because it can improve an employee's performance - especially if that worker is always on the move.

One effective way to educate all employees about this is to orient them before they are hired. You can also put the policy to your company handbook.

For me the recent mobile wave does not contradict IT. In fact, this so-called trend moves with IT. As mobility wave rises, so as Information Technology - and vice versa. The two depend on one another.

In a working environment, it really depends on the size of the organization. SMEs are managed differently from multinational and big corporations. They also have very dissimilar resources. Therefore, the mobile wave can't be attached to a single platform.

Getting the legalese and fine print down is a daunting task, thankfully not one that admins have to deal with. But they do need to be able to cooperate with the company lawyers and HR staff drafting the document to make sure that the correct provisions for security are in place from the get go and that the policy functions for its intended purpose: keeping sensitive information safe and secure.
