FREEWARE version of GFI WebMonitor available for download

on August 14, 2009

We are proud to offer a FREEWARE version of our successful web monitoring software, GFI WebMonitor for ISA Server.

Web Security in Organizations

Unmonitored internet access can present some serious security risks if files are downloaded by users without scanning of any sort because viruses could be present in the download which, in turn, could infect the entire network. There is also the issue of time-wasting which, when seen from an organization’s point of view, leads to a loss of productivity and therefore loss of profits. If employees are spending longer periods of time browsing the internet on non work-related sites then that is going to affect their work and productivity level. Whilst internet access is necessary for most people to do their job, management needs to be assured that their employees aren’t wasting time updating their social networking profile or chatting to friends during work hours.

We Care with Freeware

Therefore, as part of our recently launched WE CARE initiative, we’re giving organizations the ability to monitor web browsing in their organization in real-time at no cost through our FREEWARE version of GFI WebMonitor.

GFI WebMonitor 2009 – new features

The commercial version of GFI WebMonitor allows users to not only view web browsing activity in the organization, but to also block access to sites on an individual or group level. The latest release of GFI WebMonitor also includes a new feature: Hidden Downloads Checking. This feature will block and identify background processes from downloading payloads that may be malicious in nature or use up network resources.

GFI WebMonitor gives administrators the ability to control which sites users can browse; thereby blocking sites of particular genres such as adult, gaming, social networking, etc. Web monitoring is made easy with WebGrade, an extensive database that provides URL coverage for 165,000,000 domains and that is continuously updated.

We’re considering making this a part of our standard ISA deployment checklist, but I’m curious if the free version will show any kind of nag screens or reminders to the customer using it?

Currently there is only a single installer for GFI WebMonitor. This means that the Freeware version is installed using the same build used for evaluation. When the (10-day/30-day) evaluation period expires, the product will automatically switch to freeware mode.

By default the product will send email notifications and show nagware messages 15, 5 and 0 days before evaluation expiry. Once product is expired (and running in freeware mode) there will be no more nagware messages shown to the user.
