I think Microsoft's Outlook has actually done a good job of adapting to the needs of the archiving market, and in e-mail in general. It's true that their track record for their other software is shoddy at best, but in terms of multiple e-mail address management, mobile customizability and over functionality, I have to commend Microsoft in at least getting Outlook done right. Let's just hope that they try to keep consistent with future releases.

I don't necessarily think that the needs of e-mail archiving is changing, but that the literal practice of archiving is expanding in directions never thought possible. I agree that Gmail really started the trend of near limitless amounts of storage space for e-mail. And with a very intuitive e-mail interface to boot, it's no surprise that a lot of web based e-mail hosting sites have had to play catch up since then.

I'd prefer a cloud based solution. That way if a server crashes or a natural disaster hits your office, your emails are still safe and sound. It eliminates the hassle of backing up and the expense of increasing physical space for servers.
