Furthermore, what Adam said is that even the most trusted names miss one here and there >>> on day zero <<<. He is referring to the fact that there is a certain time lag between the outbreak of a virus and an update going out for an AV to handle it (unless it can handle it proactively). Now, that time lag will vary - sometimes one AV handles a particular virus first, sometimes another AV. Hence, having multiple AV engines in place gives you a better chance of being protected as early as possible.

Josh, the article is merely referring to the fact that GFI MailEssentials supports scanning emails for viruses with multiple antivirus engines which can all be licensed from GFI and without needing to purchase them from "other developers".

Yes, layered approaches to virus and spam protection sound good. But, most small and medium businesses might not want to invest on additional security. It is, after all, not really critical to their main objective. The article touts the benefits of GFI MailEssentials but mentions in passing that additional protection can be purchased from other virus or spam software developers. This does not sound that there is enough confidence on MailEssentials.

Adam, you said that there are trusted names that fail to detect some virus. Do share the list. I'll inquire from those companies what further updates have been done to take care of it.

Redundancies can be costly. Something I am often doubtful to do.

I love the layered approach to virus detection, as when you look at any report about a new trojan or worm, you can typically see which antivirus software detects it and which don't, and even the most trusted names miss one here and there on day zero. It's really not excessive when you're actually using it and from there you can feel much more safe.
