Ditto! I understand why owners of small and medium businesses would try to go it themselves, relying on forums to kind of "figure out" how to fix things and all. But some things are better left to the professionals: the skilled and the experienced.

Plus, if you really want your business to grow, you are better off doing the things directly related to the business or even handling a bit of the sales process rather than burying your nose in trying to understand, implement or troubleshoot IT issues. If you wanted to do that, you should have studied to be an IT administrator in the first place.

@Aaron: Software like GFI WebMonitor is meant to do exactly that, take the complexity out of implementing a comprehensive web security solution. It also does quite a few other things but that is beyond the scope of this blog :)

@Ian: Most antivirus software today actually caters for all the malware you mention above. I would say that antivirus have now become antimalware. One thing that GFI WebMonitor does more than your traditional antimalware is the ability to stop exploits websites distributing exploits.

You should protect yourself not only against viruses. They might be the most popular type of malware but there are also rootkits, keyloggers, and other pests antivirus engines not always provide against. Make sure that the antivirus programs you use are antimalware or get dedicated programs for this.

This is a clear indication of how setting up security for a company isn't as simple as throwing up a firewall or an antivirus and calling it a day. Any business owners who aren't IT-minded should heed a list like this and call in a professional if they feel they're in over their head, so that they can be completely protected without stepping over their resources or losing focus on how they make their money.
